Architectural History of the Museum Building
Designed by OZ Architecture of Denver and completed in 2002, the 24,000 sq. ft. Longmont Museum &
Cultural Center offers three large exhibition galleries, a gift shop, classrooms, an outdoor pavilion
and courtyard, a reading room for researchers, and an exquisite observation room – the “Longs Peak
Family Interactive Gallery” – with views from the snowy peaks to the Plains. Behind the scenes,
state-of-the-art climate-controlled storage rooms house the Longmont Archives and an extensive
collection of artifacts.
With a contemporary design and elegant detailing, the Museum sports a red brick and sandstone exterior,
a slate and stone lobby floor, cedar hallway ceilings, and maple trim. Large windows look out to the
courtyard, making for a spacious and airy feeling, and the building is filled with light. Moveable
partitions and a sophisticated lighting system provide the flexibility to offer a range of exciting
exhibit experiences. The brightly colored Discovery Days Room welcomes children, while the courtyard
provides space for concerts, outdoor receptions, and picnic lunches on balmy days.
It’s a truly lovely space for the entire community to enjoy.
